tile drainage

Tile drainage is the process of installing underground pipes that help remove excess water from the soil. At PLS, we use durable corrugated polyethylene (PE) pipes for every installation.

The name “tile drainage” comes from the past, when concrete or clay tiles were used instead of modern materials. Today’s systems use perforated plastic pipe, carefully placed at a precise grade below the surface. This allows water to seep into the pipe and flow out to a ditch, creek, or other outlet.

By lowering the water table, tile drainage prevents crop roots from sitting in saturated soil. This creates healthier growing conditions where plants can access the moisture and oxygen they need, while avoiding the stress of excess water.
1.

How is
it installed?

We install tile drainage using advanced, commercially built tile plows guided by GPS technology, with access to up to multiple satellites at a time. This level of precision ensures every system is installed to perform at its best.
But technology is only part of the equation. Successful drainage depends on the skill of the operator, which is why we rely exclusively on highly trained professionals to run our equipment.
2.

Will tile dry
out the soil?

The short answer is no. Without it, the additional water causes the roots to drown due to a lack of oxygen. Once the tile drainage is installed, it only removes excess water, which is occupying airspace in the soil. Tile drainage leaves the “hygroscopic” water behind.

Smarter Water Management.
Stronger Land

Tile drainage acts as a “buffer” to excess rainfall by creating room in the soil for water to soak in over time. It is proven to reduce surface runoff by up to 29%, cut phosphorus losses by as much as 45%, and protect soil from erosion—all while delivering more consistent yields.

FAQ

What is agricultural tile drainage, and how does it benefit my farm?
Agricultural tile drainage is one of the most effective land-improvement tools available today. At Precision Land Solutions, we see the greatest impact in risk reduction. Good water management allows farmers to farm with confidence — instead of working around wet spots or waiting for fields to dry, you can plan your operations and sleep at night knowing your land will respond consistently. With land prices at historic highs, improving the land you already own or rent simply makes sense. While ROI will vary by operation, the market feedback we receive is overwhelmingly positive. The benefits go well beyond yield — drainage reduces stress, improves timeliness, enhances soil conditions, and helps unlock the full productive potential of your acres.
How do you determine the optimal drainage design for my land?
Our design process is built on over 20 years of hands-on experience and the most extensive surveying and design background in Western Canada. We use RTK GPS and LiDAR data to build precise topographic models and create drainage designs tailored to the unique landscape and management style of each farm. Because we’ve been involved since tile drainage was in its infancy in Western Canada, our designs reflect not only our successes but also the hard-earned lessons learned along the way. We evaluate all pertinent factors — soil type, slope, outlets, utilities, cultural practices, and operational goals — to ensure the system functions exactly as intended. Every project receives a custom design, ensuring your investment delivers long-term performance and reliability.
What is the typical timeline for a tile drainage project?
Every project begins with a face-to-face meeting to understand your needs, challenges, and goals. From there, we gather the high-quality survey data required to build a customized drainage design. Often at the same time, we initiate the regulatory approval process, which can be the most time-consuming part of a project. Our long-standing relationships with regulators and utilities help streamline this step as much as possible. Turnaround times for the design and quote vary depending on data availability, but our new technology - LiDAR drone, allows us to collect top-tier data even during wet periods, when crops are standing, or before bush clearing. This greatly expands our ability to work quickly and flexibly. We encourage farmers to plan one year ahead of their desired installation date. We book projects year-round for in-season construction.
Do I need permits or approvals, and can you help with them?
Yes — tile drainage projects generally require regulatory approvals, and in many cases, these can be time-consuming and complex. Precision Land Solutions has extensive experience navigating this process. We maintain strong relationships with regulators, utilities, and municipalities, and we frequently present to councils and work directly with stakeholders to ensure a smooth path forward. We handle all permit applications on behalf of our clients. If a farmer prefers to manage their own paperwork, we’re happy to guide, support, and provide whatever information is needed. Because the regulatory process takes time, we strongly recommend starting approvals as early as possible to keep your project on schedule.
What maintenance does a tile drainage system require?
Tile drainage systems require very little maintenance when installed correctly — and with a high-quality installation, many farmers go years without needing to do anything at all. The main thing to watch is the outlets: ensure they remain clear, visible, and protected from damage. Occasionally, outlets can be crushed by ditch mowing equipment, which may restrict drainage. For systems with lift stations, maintenance is more important. Over the years, we’ve developed an extremely robust and reliable lift station solution, and we offer optional remote monitoring systems to allow farmers to check or control lift stations from anywhere. Precision Land Solutions also offers annual service packages to inspect, maintain, and winterize lift stations to ensure they are ready for spring and operate trouble-free throughout the season.
